As a youth, Enzo Ferrari had as his hero a flying ace named Francesco Baracca who died in a plane crash. After Ferrari had established himself as a prominent racing drive, the Baracca family presented him with a charred plaque taken from their son's wreckage. On the plaque was their family symbol, a black horse on a yellow background. Ferrari took this as his personal symbol and it was prominently displayed on Ferrari cars later manufactured.

"We recently tested the newest Ferrari, the F430 coupe, on the twisty roads of Italy's Emilia-Romagna region. Throughout the day, pedestrians stopped dead in their tracks as we drove by. One teenage Italian boy, who had been riding his bicycle around the streets of Maranello, Ferrari's home, halted alongside the F430 as we waited at a stoplight. He shook his head in wonder and disbelief. "Che bella macchina!" he responded -- "What a beautiful car!" We encountered similar responses all day."
