Kia's strategy of moving into the US market region by region proved extremely successful and set a model for entering the US market. In less than a decade, Kia surpassed even their most generous sales expecations to become a significant player in the US auto market. Kia's troubles in 1997 helped to push South Korea into the Asian financial crisis, and it was acquired in 1998 by the Hyundai Motor Company. Hyundai resisted this move but were forced by the Korean government to take over Kia as part of the strategy to fix Korea's financial crisis. Kia Motors Corporation was the fastest growing car company in the world in 2004.

The 2004 Kia Amanti made an “Impact” at the 2004 New York International Auto Show when Car.com named it “The Most Significant New Entry Into The Luxury Segment,” receiving one of the web site’s four “Impact” awards. The editors of Car.com, a popular online multimedia company established by car enthusiasts to serve automotive buyers, dealers and manufacturers, evaluated more than 300 vehicles in every industry segment to compile the web site’s first annual Editor’s Choice Awards.
