In 1967, Mazda began building a car with a rotary engine. The car was released in 1968 and called the Mazda Cosmos or 110S. Two of these cars proved the worth of the rotary engines after entering the Marathon de la Route at the legendary Nürburgring circuit in Germany where one finished in the top four and the other, after nearly completing the race in fifth place, had to drop out because of a broken axle. The Cosmo name is symbolic as a brand made by Mazda.
