In 1928, Chrysler founded the Plymouth brand as a low end car to help set up a full range of brands similar to what the General Motors corporation offered at that time. Over the years, prior to being disbanded, Plymouth was to produce several models that were unique to the industry including an early convertible for the Chrysler company when even Chevrolet had still to build one. Names such as Barracuda, Voyager, Cruiser, Valiant, Fury, Prowler, and Neon were featured as Plymouths. The last Plymouth, a Neon, was manufactured in 2001.

PLYMOUTH CARS

"The Plymouth RoadRunner was developed as a mid-priced car and was placed between the Satellie and Belvedere model line up. It was built on the B-body platform. The RoadRunner was light and featured few amenities. This not only drove the price of the vehicle into territory that most could afford, but it gave an advantage over heavier vehicles. The front and back seats were both bench."

On November 3, 1999, Jim Holden, President of the Chrysler side of DaimlerChrysler, announced that the Plymouth brand would be discontinued at the end of the 2001 model year. On September 23, 1999, the Detroit News had carried an article which, in essence, said that the Plymouth brand was dead. A companion article was an obituary and eulogy for the Plymouth brand. At the time, DaimlerChrysler refused to comment on the articles - a sure sign, at the time, that the discontinuation was a done deal.
